DAILY ASSISTANT GARDENER

We seek to employ a full-time experienced assistant gardener with experience to join a small team within a private family estate near Brockenhurst, Hampshire.

Applicants must have an eye for attention to detail and be self-motivated, ability to work alone or under direction, and as part of a team. Flexibility to assist with non-garden estate tasks and be comfortable with horses/dogs when required is essential.

The applicant needs some experience of the day-to-day maintenance of large gardens. Encompassing lawns, hedges, formal herbaceous - mixed borders, woodland/trees and a wide range of shrubs, wildflower areas, ponds, kitchen garden, greenhouse/house plants, ditches, drainage, and fencing.

Requirements:

  • Experience and basic knowledge of horticultural practices to include maintaining herbaceous borders, roses, hedges, pruning techniques, pest and disease control, plant propagation, mulching and weed control, compost management, lawn care, hedge/topiary, strimming, leaf blowing, some vegetable and nursery growing, bedding planting and soil management. 
  • Horticultural qualification preferred but not essential.
  • Competence in the safe operations and maintenance of garden machinery to include strimmer’s, sprayers, hedge cutters, mowers, garden/compact tractors and trailers, leaf blowers.  Chainsaw and spraying certificates (PA1/PA6) a bonus but not essential. 

This is a fulltime position working Monday – Friday from 8.00am – 4.30pm, with some additional watering and summer cover requiring one in three weekends to assist in watering and gardens cover Mid-June – End August. Essential Requirements: Flexible proactive couple with experience working in a country household, genuine animal and country lovers, long term, family oriented, team players, BOTH must drive, willing to work weekends when needed

An experienced domestic couple is required to share the day-to-day management of a large country household in the Meon Valley, approx. 20 mins drive from Winchester. This is a part residence home of a mature couple who also have a home Overseas and a property in London. Essential that candidates have a flexible attitude to their work and can keep the residence running smoothly in the principal’s absence.

Domestic responsibilities: 

  • Cleaning to a high standard throughout the home
  • Laundry, ironing and wardrobe management
  • Care and cleaning of high-quality furnishings, fine art, and fabrics
  • Provisioning and household organisation and management
  • Overseeing 3rd parties including window cleaners, plumbers, electricians, dry cleaners, to ensure household is constantly in full working order
  • Kitchen support and informal service when the family entertain
  • Helping with planning family parties and entertaining
  • Cooking/ food prep for the principals when in residence and their visiting children and grandchildren.
  • Capable to prepare a good Sunday lunch
  • Assistance with caring for the owners 2 dogs when required.
  • Pet sit and house-sit when the family are away.

 Grounds/General Household responsibilities

  • Household maintenance and general maintenance work throughout the house and grounds
  • General garden maintenance, duties include maintenance of flowerbeds, lawns, allotments and use of machinery (tractors/mowers etc). There will be support with outside gardener. 
  • Looking after cars
  • Occasional driving (airport runs)
  • Liaising with security providers, service providers and monitoring systems.
  • Overseeing 3rd parties including oil tanks, cess pit, car services/MOT
  • Pool maintenance alongside contractor
  • Machinery maintenance. alongside contractor
  • Helping/serving when entertaining 
  • Pet sit and house sit when the family are away

Working week: 5 days inc weekends when required. 2 days off per week.

Accom 2 bed cottage within the grounds of the residence, newly refurbished, can be furnished or unfurnished. Sorry no dogs (ideally no pets) or dependents.

HEAD GARDENER

Essential Requirements: Previous private house experience, knowledge of irrigation systems, woodland management, strong communications skills

We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable Head Gardener to maintain the beautiful 25-hectare estate gardens for discerning clients according to their preferences and aesthetic sensibility. The candidate will be assisted by an experienced Assistant Gardener plus two part-time junior gardeners. The Head Gardener duties will include:

  1. Planting, transplanting, fertilizing, applying chemicals, watering, pruning, and weeding flower beds and plant areas.
  2. Maintaining flowers, bushes, trees, and shrubs.
  3. Woodland Management 
  4. Cut flowers for household use
  5. Maintenance and understanding of inground irrigation systems
  6. Implementing detailed landscape plans.
  7. Planting and propagating bedding plants; manage greenhouse and kitchen garden operations, as applicable.
  8. Greenhouse propagation of flowers and vegetables used in the kitchen garden, produce from this garden is used extensively by the Chef.
  9. Assist in the work direction and on-the-job training of other personnel.
  10. Picks up and disposes of litter.
  11. May assist in various maintenance activities as required.
  12. May operate a motor vehicle and tractor to transport materials and equipment, as appropriate to the position.
  13. Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, garden implements and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  14. Maintenance of the ponds
  15. Indoor pool maintenance
  16. Maintenance of the horse paddocks
  17. May oversee and/or assist with snow removal activities.
  18. May irrigate, mow, rake, and trim lawns and/or grazing fields.
  19. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  20. Maintaining good records of expenses and providing reconciled expense sheets.

You will be required to maintain this property to the very highest standard all year round. When the principals are in residence, you will be expected to be very flexible with your time.

The garden is in need of someone enthusiastic and passionate, someone who takes pride in their work and is able to work in an efficient, organised and focused manner. Candidate must have excellent attention to detail, to identify issues before the principals do and the ability to take initiative and be proactive in resolving them. There are always new projects being undertaken on the estate, so the candidate will be heavily involved in these. Creativity is essential.

There are 2 dogs on the property when the principals are in residence and the household is busy with entertaining and the house is fully staffed. This is very much a ‘all-hands-on-deck’ environment where the Team work closely together to ensure the smooth running of the property.

A pickup truck will be provided for work purposes so valid driver’s license is essential. A great track record of experience on a private estate is essential.

5 Days / Week – flexible during busier periods. Must reside on site one weekend a month to cover for House and Stable Managers. When the principals are in residence for July and August, you will be working 7 days. Start Date ASAP. A non-smoker is essential, as are exceptional references. Salary £40,000. (HU3021)
