This is a superb, new position for a fluent English and French speaking horticulturist with ability to maintain, to a very high standard, 1 acre of gardens. The position will require someone very knowledgeable in plant material, trees and shrubs and somebody who is able to work closely with the owner, who is herself extremely knowledgeable, loves her gardens and has special ideas and projects in mind for this newly acquired property. Renovation work will commence on the house in April and is expected to be ongoing for 18 months.
It would be especially helpful if the successful applicant was knowledgeable in the Dutch/German landscape tradition of Piet Ouldolf, though not essential.
Candidates should be superb plantsmen, experienced in all aspects of the gardening year and able to communicate well. Must be able to coordinate and develop any further areas of the property as required, working alongside the employer, landscaper and outside contractors. A team player is required, with the ability to muck in and somebody who is willing to help this charming owner with running odd errands and to assist when and where needed. A “Can Do” attitude is essential. Duties will include sole care of the gardens and the exterior of the residence. You will be required also to maintain the annual garden manual, keeping photographic updates as well as a written record.
Candidates must be able to grow and maintain a large variety of high-quality plants, maintain electrics/garden lighting and automatic watering, manage the weekly garden maintenance team, deal with outside contractors and visitors to the estate and care for the swimming pool. Excellent people-skills required. Negotiable salary, together with vehicle for work related hours. Hours normally 8am-4pm Monday-Friday. HEAD GARDENER/ESTATE MANAGER - TORONTO CANADA mid-town Toronto estate is seeking a full-time, year-round salaried Estate Gardener. YOU MUST BE LEGAL TO WORK IN CANADA OR SPEAK FLUENT FRENCH (which allows client to Sponsor application.)
The garden is internationally acclaimed and is maintained at the highest standards.
The candidate for this position will manage extensive perennial beds, a large lawn, vegetable gardens, and a naturalized ravine. He/she will oversee a full time seasonal Junior Gardener, and will manage numerous professionals, such as arborists, horticulturists, irrigation teams and lawn specialists who also service the garden.
The successful candidate will manage all inventories relevant to the garden, help to upkeep an extensive manual, keep to a clearly defined monthly schedule and manage all administration and expenditures relating to maintaining the garden.
The Head Gardener also ensures that the grounds including patios, decks and pool are always kept well-tended .
Extensive horticultural experience is required as is a minimum of 10 years working experience in a similar position. An in-depth knowledge of plant materials, plant and tree diseases, pruning strategies, soil conditions and watering needs will be required to succeed in this role. A strong work ethic and an understanding that gardening hours are erratic and seasonal, are also essential.
Preference will be given to candidates who have obtained a Master Gardner certificate.
Applicants should have a strong work ethic, strong English communication skills and the ability to anticipate needs and manage time effectively.
In addition, the applicant must maintain privacy and confidentiality at all times, exercising diplomacy, discretion and respecting appropriate boundaries. They must also have a professional personal presentation.
The applicant must possess, or be willing to obtain a valid, clean Ontario driver’s licence (class G) and must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Live-in / Live-out opportunity
A Hampshire Estate requires a talented and experienced gardener (daily or live in) to work in association with the Estate Manager to transform the existing formal and informal gardens which extend to approximately 4 acres. The position includes aspects of landscape design and implementation, together with ongoing maintenance and the associated project management and purchasing of plants and materials.
The property is situated in over 150 acres of land - and although situated fairly close to towns with good transport links - a passion for rural life is essential. Private onsite accommodation can be provided.
The individual must have a keen eye for detail, thorough portfolio of garden design and horticultural experience. A flexible, proactive approach and willingness to embrace and adapt to a variety of tasks is required as well as a self-motivating and positive outlook.
Longevity in the role is expected and you will be joining an existing team of staff who have worked with the family for many years. (HU3593)
