LIVE-IN BUTLER
Duns, Scottish Borders
Shooting Estate - Rural Location

An experienced residential Butler is required for a beautiful shooting estate based near Duns, Scottish Borders. You will ensure that the Lodge, and in particular the dining room, breakfast room, pantry and bar (and all wet stock) are correctly maintained.

The primary role is to ensure the delivery of all forms of service to the owner and their guests when in residence. The Lodge should be kept in a state of preparation for occupancy at all times, allowing for family/guests to arrive at short notice.  It is, therefore, essential that the standard of service, cleaning and general maintenance of the Lodge is impeccable.  The Butler must ensure that correct standards and practices are maintained. You will develop a well-ordered routine for daily tasks during family visits, and an in-depth program to include specific tasks when the house is unoccupied.  You will be working alongside other household staff, and need to have a a sunny, and upbeat yet professional disposition.

This is a beautiful shooting Estate, and staff must be comfortable with taxidermy in the Lodge.

Must be able to drive.  Please note, this role is in the Borders of Scotland with the nearest village being 10 min drive.

Hours of Work

Principals not in residence: Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00 with 5 days on and 2 days off out of 7.  Generally, Mon – Fri.

Principals in residence: Whatever hours are required to fulfil the criteria of the position.  It is understood that weekends will be worked when Principals are in residence

General Responsibilities (Principal in Residence)

  • Reporting to House Manager and acting as second head of house if the House Manager is not present
  • Meeting guests, serving drinks, table and tray service
  • Receive guests and arrange luggage to rooms
  • For departing guests arrange for luggage to be brought from rooms and packed into vehicles
  • Running the dining room, Butler’s pantry, bar and breakfast room
  • Running errands and shopping as required by the Principal or House Manager
  • Maintaining an inventory of the silver and other designated collections. Ensuring that silver/gilt and other objects are kept clean at all times
  • Ensuring the cleaning, maintaining and the correct storage of the silver, crystal, and china tableware
  • Logistics for flight arrival/departures for family, guests and staff
  • Maintaining a wine inventory, ensuring that the necessary steps are taken when stocks are low. Keeping the wine cellars clean and tidy
  • Ordering and maintaining of wet stock and liaising with the House Manager
  • Replacing candles and ordering as required
  • Valeting clothing and cleaning boots/shoes and the care of outdoor clothing in the Boot Room
  • Ordering/cancelling newspapers as appropriate for family/guests
  • Taking telephone messages, censoring calls and passing on to owner and guests as necessary
  • Arranging valeting of family and guest vehicles with Estate staff
  • Assisting House Manager with organising and managing private Lodge functions and shoot lunches in association with Estate Management and relevant staff
  • Assisting with Shoot Lunches and elevenses, serving guests food and drinks during the shoot day, in addition to helping the House Staff prepare the Lunch Huts for the shoot days
  • Close communication with the House Manager about any maintenance and repairs required
  • Report any incident details to the House Manager/Factor
  • Make sure that that all appliances are working before the principal arrives i.e., TV/Wi-Fi, Security systems, printer etc
  • Driving as required

General Responsibilities (Principal not in Residence)

  • Reporting to House Manager as line manager
  • Maintaining an inventory of the silver and other designated collections. Ensuring that silver/gilt and other objects are kept clean at all times
  • Cleaning of the crystal chandeliers and the glass lamp shades in the dining room and other rooms with housekeeping staff
  • Ensuring the cleaning, maintaining and the correct storage of the silver, crystal, and china tableware
  • Polishing of all the ornamental silver, i.e., picture frames, trophies, etc
  • Polishing and buffing of the wooden floors with housekeeping staff
  • Maintaining a wine inventory, ensuring that the necessary steps are taken when stocks are low. Keeping the wine cellars clean and tidy
  • During this time the focus is bringing the Lodge back up to standard and prepare for the next visit

Fulltime position with accommodation provided (all utilities included).  Salary £40,000. 28 days holiday inclusive of bank holidays, statutory pension. (HU3970)
