Head Butler/House Manager
A privately-owned Palladian Mansion, located just outside Barnet and set in 250 acres of parkland. The house is used both as a private residence and let out for both filming and private corporate events. When the house is let out, it is our role to ensure the house is well looked after, but catering is provided by outside caterers, and each event is managed by an Event or Party Planner. Our role is just to look after the house and ensure everything runs efficiently.

Duties:

•To be responsible for the security of the house always and to ensure a member of staff is always on
duty in the house.
•To arrange the house staff rota to ensure there is cover at all times with the support of additional
staff at busy times.
•To ensure that key staff within the house are not all on holiday at the same time and agree dates with
individual members of house staff and keep a record of their allowance.
•To keep the other house staff informed of the movements and requirements of both the Principals and
the corporate bookings.
•To keep and maintain a very high standard of housekeeping throughout the whole house and to advise the
Property Manager of any repairs or maintenance that are required and keep these recorded in the
Maintenance Book.
•To make sure that all H&S requirements are adhered to.
•To keep an Accident Record book up to date.
•To be a competent First Aider. If not, we will arrange for you to attend a course, if not already
qualified.
•To organise servicing of all equipment within the house on a regular basis in conjunction with the Property Manager.
•To be responsible for the ordering and payment of provisions required for the cleaning and upkeep of
the house and to also be responsible for checking and agreeing the purchasing of food and drinks as
required for the Principal.
•To serve butler style at private dinner parties.
•To be knowledgeable about how to lay a table correctly.
•To be responsible for the management of house accounts, keep an accurate record of expenditure and
present monthly account to the office at the end of each month.
•To keep an accurate record of any Petty Cash expenditure and add to the monthly accounts.
•To be responsible for looking after the house during corporate events and occasions.
•To liaise directly with the Front of House or Party Planner during the running of the actual events.
•To arrange staff to be on duty through the booking and whenever access to the house is required.
•To report back to the Sales Office with any concerns regarding the caterers/suppliers/management of
any events.
•To liaise with the Cook regarding entertaining and day to day cooking for the Principal and his
guests.
•Together with the Cook to be responsible for all purchases of food, ensuring that monthly accounts are
prepared and accounted for.
•To ensure that provisions required to maintain the cleanliness of the house are kept well stocked and
to advise the Principal before any major expenses are incurred.
•To direct the Housekeeper, Cook, Houseman and other personnel of the jobs that need doing and the
diary for each week.
•To liaise closely with the Filming Steward concerning the preparation and restoring of the house for
the purposes of filming.
•To help with moving furniture in preparation for events and filming.
•The successful applicants to be presentable, competent, confident and organised with a friendly and
welcoming personality.
•It is critical to the success of the Estate(for both private and corporate guests) they are made to
feel at home and welcome.
•To advise the Principal or his office of any damage to furniture, fabrics or any other items which
need repair or restoration.
•To keep an up-to-date record of the Wine Cellar.
•To be able to cook to a relatively high standard and take over the cooking duties when the Cook if off
duty or away.
•A vehicle is provided for daily business, but not for private use.
•The applicant will need his/her own transport as the Estate is not near a bus stop, although Public
Transport is close by and the train or tube into London are all within 5 minutes’ drive.

Hours of Work:
•Daily as required. From 8am to approx. 6pm, but there will occasionally be the need to work evenings
when the Principal is entertaining or at home for dinner and if the Cook if off duty.
•Generally, the House Manager will be required to work 5 days a week, and most weekends. Wednesday and
Thursday will be the two days off each week. Weekends can occasionally be taken off, subject to what
is happening in the house and by prior agreement with the Principal.
•A total of 23 days Annual Leave if offered, and if a Bank Holiday day is worked, a day off will be
granted in lieu.

Accommodation:
•A two-bedroomed flat is provided within the Main House, but this is not suitable accommodation for
children or animals.
•All services are provided for with the exception of phone calls. (HU2053)
Salary circa £35,000 based on experience.
