We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable Head Gardener to maintain a beautiful 25-acre estate gardens for discerning clients according to their preferences and aesthetic sensibility. The candidate will be assisted by an experienced Assistant Gardener plus two part-time junior gardeners. The Head Gardener duties will include:
Planting, transplanting, fertilizing, applying chemicals, watering, pruning, and weeding flower beds and plant areas.
Maintaining flowers, bushes, trees, and shrubs.
Woodland Management
Cut flowers to be grown for household use when owners are in residence
Maintenance and understanding of inground irrigation systems
Implementing detailed landscape plans.
Planting and propagating bedding plants; manage greenhouse and kitchen garden operations, as applicable.
Greenhouse propagation of flowers and vegetables used in the kitchen garden, produce from this garden is used extensively by the Chef.
Assist in the work direction and on-the-job training of other personnel.
May assist in various maintenance activities as required.
Will operate a motor vehicle and tractor to transport materials and equipment, as appropriate to the position.
Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, garden implements and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Maintenance of the ponds
Horse paddock management in conjunction with the Stable Yard Manager, Estate Manager and owner
May oversee and/or assist with snow removal activities.
May irrigate, mow, rake, and trim lawns and/or grazing fields.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Maintaining good records of expenses and providing reconciled expense sheets.
Candidate must be respectful of his/her fellow colleagues which will contribute to a positive and welcoming working environment. Excellent communication skills are essential.
Candidate will be required to maintain this property to the very highest standard all year round. When the principals are in residence, you will be expected to be flexible with your time.
The garden is in need of someone enthusiastic and passionate, someone who takes pride in their work and is able to work in an efficient, organised and focused manner. Candidate must have excellent attention to detail, to identify issues before the principals do and the ability to take initiative and be proactive in resolving them. There are always new projects being undertaken on the estate, so the candidate will be heavily involved in these. Creativity is essential.
There are 2 dogs on the property when the principals are in residence and the household is busy with entertaining and the house is fully staffed. This is very much a ‘all-hands-on-deck’ environment where the close-knit Team work together to ensure the smooth running of the property.
A pickup truck and other staff cars will be provided for work purposes, so valid driver’s license is essential. A great track record of experience on a private estate is essential.
5 Days / Week – flexible during busier periods. Position could potentially be a live in position but doesn’t have to be, open to negotiation. When the principals are in residence for July and August, you will be working 6 days. Start Date ASAP. A non-smoker is essential, as are exceptional references. Salary £45,000. (HU3021)
